Despite the nagging rain and bad weather, K.D.W.S. embarked on the planned annual Kids’ Day Out event with more than 50 underprivileged children at Alipore Zoo, Kolkata, on February 16, 2014 free of cost, for the whole day with fun and educational activities creating an enjoyable learning journey. For some it was their first experience. The zoo administration and K.D.W.S members left no stone unturned to make the day a memorable one for them. The children enjoyed their day to the fullest. The kids did not feel a bit tired nor did their spirits dampen because of the bad weather. They were happy taking walks around the zoo in lines, waving their hands, swinging and seeing the chirping birds and other animals. It was wonderful to look at the animals that they had only seen in books. The children enjoyed their breakfast and lunch saved by K.D.W.S. and finished the trip by 3:30 pm. We are really thankful and grateful to our honorable chief guest, Councilor, Shri. Sushanta Kumar Ghosh, MMIC, for his presence and blessings. We would also like to thank all our sponsors and partners (special thanks to Rene), and Zoo administration for without whom this event would not have been possible. Special thanks also goes out to the members of K.D.W.S. and volunteers from “A Fortin Star Club” without whose cooperation this event could not have seen the day of light. Beyond a fun day out, we certainly hope that this excursion to the Alipore Zoo will inspire these children who will treasure the memories and mementos from the visit for a long time to come and nourish their minds in the classroom and beyond.

This year along with other esteemed NGO’s, Kasba Dweep Welfare Society made its presence felt at the Gangasagar pilgrimage through distribution of free packaged drinking water to hundreds of pilgrims to quench their thirst while they make their way to the holy pilgrimage. Every year in the month of January, the Gangasagar pilgrimage and fair attracts thousands of pilgrims from all around India to take a holy dip in the river Ganges and offer their prayer at the Kapil Muni Ashram. This is the second largest congregation of mankind after the holy Kumbha Mela. The Gangasagar fair and pilgrimage is held annually on the Sagar Island’s southern tip in the Ganges delta atop the Bay of Bengal during Makar Sankranti. The holy dip is believed to wash their sins away and lead to the attainment of Moksha. We are happy to be part of this great spectacle called Gangasagar Mela and hope to be part of it in the coming years as well and offering better services for the pilgrims

In reference to the article “Urgent Appeal for Help..!! on Ms. Hasina Khatun, daughter of Hasina Khatun & FamilyMrs. Sahanara Bewa, we are really happy to announce that after a long and agonizing wait of more than four months, she has been successfully operated and is back home with her family. She was initially diagnosed with multiple calculi in the gallbladder and needed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy operation, but due do medical complications was delayed for 4 months. Finally, on January 8, 2014, she underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy successfully and is now discharged home recuperating from the surgery. We at K.D.W.S. supported and helped the family go through hard times helping them with covering the cost to the entire medical tests and medicines, and other surgical expenses from our Medical Relief Fund which has been setup exclusively for funding of specialized treatments for the poor and needy, but this would not have been possible if not for the undeniable and overwhelming support and help we got from all the people from Facebook who have liked our page and the donors listed on our website whose generous contributions went a long way in fulfilling this objective. We would also like to specially thank Goodwill Nursing Home for their medical support right from the beginning. We have come a long way since inception of our program and the outcomes have been extraordinary and we intend to continue with our goals of working for Women and Children health and education with this continued support.
