Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can anybody do an internship?
We would like to make sure that both the individual and the project find the internship mutually beneficial. We screen both prospective interns and our projects for their suitability.

What are the eligibility criteria for an intern?
We would like the intern to be somewhat familiar with the concept of social welfare and be able to demonstrate that he or she is sensitive to the cultural and environmental differences in West Bengal, and will be able to adjust to the conditions.

The internship should be for at least 6 weeks.   The intern should be able to demonstrate that he or she can support the cost of the internship for its duration.  The intern should have a local contact (friend, family etc) that will provide local support to the intern.

What qualities are we seeking in our interns?
Though academic and professional qualifications are obviously important, we also prefer our interns to be well-rounded and personable.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.
+ Solid organizational abilities.
+ Individual initiative and flexibility.
+ Strong research and computer skills.
+ A great sense of humor.

Does K.D.W.S. accept only full-time interns?
No. K.D.W.S. is able to accommodate both full-time and part-time interns (depending on semester). For more details in this matter feel free to email us at care@dweepwelfaresociety.org.

Does K.D.W.S. Internship program prefer graduate students to undergraduate?
Yes. However, we do sometimes accept exceptional undergraduate students on a case-by-case basis. We also hire recent post-graduates.

What are the financial costs of the program to the intern?
The intern will be expected to support their costs for food, boarding and lodging.

What support will the project provide to the intern?
The project will not offer any financial support to the intern. The project may be able to arrange for facilities that provide boarding, lodging including food. Depending on the project, bedding as well as local transportation may or may not be arranged.  However, incidental expenses incurred during the program may be reimbursed based on current policy.

What projects can currently accept interns?
The list of projects that can accept interns will be posted here shortly. Contact us at internships at www.dweepwelfaresociety.org for info.

What will the project expect of the intern?
Project administrators will discuss the objectives of the internship with the intern before commencement. In general, project administrators will expect the intern to provide them help with the overall process of the project. Depending on the background and experience of the intern, they may expect the intern to help them in doing analysis or research into related issues like teaching methodology and tools, analysis of social issues related to education and healthcare.  Intern responsibilities also can include:
+ Project analysis.
+ Researching and writing articles and reports.
+ Assisting with editing.
+ Monitoring and updating essential project-specific data.
+ Providing support to K.D.W.S public events.
+ Attending conferences and roundtables on behalf of K.D.W.S.

What is the process of applying?
The intern will fill up the  K.D.W.S. Internship Application form and send it to care@dweepwelfaresociety.org.  The K.D.W.S. Internship Coordinator will receive this form and evaluate the application. If the application fits our criteria and matches to a project, the Internship Coordinator will contact the intern to see if the project is acceptable. If the intern deems the project acceptable, the K.D.W.S. Internship coordinator will put the intern in touch with the project manager, who will further communicate with the intern to determine if his or her objectives match what the project can offer, and work with the project administrator to confirm that the project can support the intern during that time.  This whole process can take around 2-3 months.

What is expected of the Intern on completion of the Internship?
The K.D.W.S. Internship Team and the Project Manager would appreciate if the Intern gives an Internship Report on their Internship experience. There is no suggested format for the Internship Report. On receipt of the Internship Report, the Team will publish it on the Project Page.

What can the Intern expect to receive on completion of the Internship?
We understand that quite a few Interns need a completion certificate. The K.D.W.S. Internship Team and the Project Manager will provide the Intern with a completion or experience certificate on successful completion of the tenure of the program.

I am all set! Where do I begin?

Some pointers

- In your cover letter, be sure to explain your interest in and enthusiasm for the organization, as often an applicant's enthusiasm for the organization and our programs will give applicants an edge. We all want to save the world, but we would much rather you explain to us how you think you are ideally suited to and can contribute to this cause.

- Applicants MUST detail their intended period of interning with us (i.e., January 1st through December 31st).

- We only require writing samples for applicants who are subsequently invited for an interview.

- If you have been selected for an interview, we will contact you approximately two weeks after the deadline for applications. Due to the volume of applications, it is wise to apply early.
